There’s a particular kind of dread that comes with being asked to present. Your palms go slightly damp. You replay your opening line in your head seventeen times. You wonder if everyone in the room will somehow sense that you don’t quite feel ready. Here’s the truth: most people who feel this way don’t lack confidence. They are simply lacking preparation. Two very different problems.

If any of the following sounds familiar, it’s a sign that your public speaking skills need some deliberate attention and the good news is, every one of these gaps is fixable.

  1. You rely on your slides to do the talking If your PowerPoint disappeared mid-presentation, would you be able to continue? If the honest answer is no, then your slides have become a crutch. Great speakers use visuals to support their message, not carry it.
  2. You speak faster when you’re nervous This is one of the most common and most damaging habits. Speed signals anxiety to your audience and makes your message harder to absorb. A well-placed pause does more for your credibility than rushing through three extra points.
  3. You have not practised out loud Reading your notes in your head is not rehearsal. Your mouth, your breathing, your pacing, these all need practice in real time. If you have never heard yourself deliver this content, you’re not ready.
  4. You don’t know your first three sentences by heart The opening of a presentation is where nerves are at their peak. If you have to think about how to begin, you are using mental energy you need for everything that follows. Know your opening cold.
  5. You have not thought about your audience Who are they? What do they already know? What do they need from you? A presentation that isn’t tailored to its audience is just a monologue. The best speakers are always thinking about the person on the receiving end.

The ability to speak well in front of others is not a talent you’re born with. It’s a skill, and like every skill, it can be learned, practised, and refined.
